If you receive error messages in both Internet Explorer and Firefox that a Web address is not found, then the problem is not with either browser. The problem is either with your computer or the Web page that you are trying to visit. You get the error message when your computer cannot connect to the website.

    • If multiple browsers report that they cannot find a Web address, the first thing to check is your Internet connection. Look at the status icon in your Windows task bar. This icon is a series of five vertical bars, each a little taller than the one to its left. It will give you an indication if your connection is on. If all five bars are grayed out, you aren’t connected; if only one or two is solid white, your connection is weak. When you hover over the icon, you should see the words “Internet access.” If you’re not connected, click the icon and follow onscreen instructions to try to reconnect. If you can’t, you might need to reboot your router. Turn it off for several seconds, then turn it back on. If rebooting your router does not fix the problem, reboot your modem in the same way. If that doesn’t work, contact your Internet service provider. The service might be temporarily down.

    • If you can access other websites, it’s possible that the website to which you are attempting to connect is down. This can happen if the website has server problems or the webmaster forgot to pay his hosting bill. You can check if the website is completely down or just down for you, by visiting a website such as Downforeveryoneorjustme.com, Isup.me or Downforeveryone.com. These sites will try to connect to the website from their servers.

    • If a website is not down for everyone, but just you, there is probably a bad connection somewhere on the path between your computer and the website. You can test this with Traceroute. Click the Windows “Start” button, type “cmd” and press “Enter” to open the Windows command prompt. Type “tracert” followed by the URL to which you are trying to connect. You will see a list of all the connections your computer attempts to use to access the website. If one of them is down, as a practical matter there isn’t anything you can do.

    • If you recently changed your firewall settings, check to make sure that you didn’t cut off access to the site to which you are trying to connect. To solve most issues with both Internet Explorer and Firefox not finding a website address, you have to wait. It is usually an issue with the website that the site owner has to fix.
