The Internal Revenue Service allow those who donate clothing to charitable organizations to deduct the value of the clothing as long as it is in good or better condition. Taxpayers who want to deduct their charitable contributions must itemize their deductions when paying taxes instead of taking the standard deduction. The IRS does not mandate that contributors use a specific valuation scale when assigning value to clothing, but contributors should be conservative in their estimates in case of an audit.

    • Donated men’s shirts should usually be valued between $2.50 and $12 per shirt. The condition of the shirt as well as its name brand can help contributors determine a shirt’s value. Contributors may also deduct sweaters for between $2.50 and $12. The high-end estimation for men’s slacks is about $12, but the low-end estimation is about $5 — a full $3 more than a shirt. Overcoats may be the largest tax deduction for contributors. Taxpayers may claim between $15 and $60 for a coat. This is the same amount that they may deduct for a full two-piece suit.

    • The low average price for a woman’s blouse or sweater is $2.50, while the average high price is $12. Contributors should expect to be able to deduct between $3 and $12 for each pair of slacks they donate. Women’s suits and coats may be deducted for around the same price as men’s coats and suits — between $15 and $60. Women’s shoes are typically worth between $3 and $25.

    • Just as children’s clothing typically costs less than adult clothing, it also is worth less when donated to a charitable organization. Boys’ shirts and girls’ blouses both have a low-end value of about $2 each. The high-end value for a blouse is $8 and a shirt is $6. A dress might be worth between $3.50 and $12 and slacks may be worth between $2 and $8. Children’s jeans might be worth between $3.50 and $12.

    • Some items — such as bath towels, blankets and pillows — are worth around the same price range as shirts and slacks. Other items — such as sofas, televisions and bedroom sets — may be worth much more. A sofa may be worth between $35 and $200, televisions could be worth between $75 and $225 and a bedroom set may be valued between $50 and $170.
