When packing, you need to remember that there are some things that may require special handling and packing. There are also some things that you might not be able to transport to your new location for several reasons. Read on for a rundown on the things that would be best to not pack for your big move.
Dangerous Items: Items which are corrosive, explosive or flammable are considered to be dangerous and are illegal to pack and move. If you have any dangerous items or goods, be sure to contact your local fire station, recycling pickup service or the nearest Environment Protection Agency office so you can find out the proper way of disposing such items. You can also give them to a neighbor or a friend so they can use them instead. Some examples of dangerous items include acid, darkroom chemicals, motor oil, pesticides, lighter fluid, fertilizer, car batteries, ammunition, loaded weapons, propane, ammonia, matches, liquid bleach and paints.
Perishable Items: These items could be packed and transported to a new location provided that the new location is nearby and they have been properly packed and stored. However, if the move requires traveling a long distance, it would be best to just dispose of all perishables you still have before moving.
Valuable Items: Valuable items do not necessarily mean that they are of high value; they could be items that are essential to you. Some examples would include: your passport, your birth certificate and other personal files; financial statements; personal videos and home movies; letters; jewelry; deeds; car key; photos and photo albums; valuable collections; stocks; tax records; school records; and medications. As much as possible, make sure that you would not be packing these and entrusting their transport to the moving company. Instead, bring them along with you so you can be sure that they would be safe and secure.
Aside from knowing which items you should not be packing, it would also be important to be sure that you would have all of the packing and moving supplies that you need for the items that you would be packing. These include packing boxes and storage wrap, moving kits, markers and labels.
