Brits looking to feel more upbeat should perhaps consider investing in property in Brazil, as the country has been named as one of the most optimistic in the world in a new survey.

Gallup International’s ‘Global Barometer of Hope and Despair’ survey asked the opinion of 64,000 people in 53 countries, finding those in the growing BRICS nations – including Brazil – were most hopeful about the year ahead.

In contrast, UK residents were shown to be particularly pessimistic, with just 23 per cent saying they believed life would be better in 2011, compared to the worldwide average of 42 per cent.

Samantha Gore, a sales expert for Brazilian property agents uv10.com, said: “It would be tricky for the locals not to feel optimistic about Brazil right now. It’s a nation of fantastic beaches, year-round sunshine, amazing food at fabulous prices and an incredible party atmosphere courtesy of a very friendly, dynamic society.”

Ms Gore added the feeling of optimism is only likely to intensify as the major sporting events the country is holding – the Fifa World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 – draw closer.

A total of 12 cities across Brazil will be hosting events during the football tournament, including Natal in the north-east state of Rio Grande do Norte.
