An expert has advised investors in Brazilian property that they must make sure they divulge their full medical history when seeking travel insurance for journeys to the country.

Staysure.co.uk advised that it is “critical” that everyone, particularly elderly passengers, divulge important information to their provider, to make sure that they are protected for the cost of treatment if they suffer any accidents and illnesses while abroad.

General manager of travel insurance at the company, Stewart Ricoh, said that concealing medical conditions could cost travellers dearly.

He explained: “When someone is unwell or recovering from treatment [abroad], the added financial misery can be devastating. We would regard the true and accurate declaration of pre-existing medical conditions as the most important part of a travel insurance purchase.”

Any holidaymakers that sign declarations to say that their insurance will cover treatment will be legally obliged to meet the costs of any claim that is declined, Mr Ricoh added.

Recent research from Age UK Enterprises revealed that there has been a 21 per cent increase in sales of annual worldwide travel insurance policies to over-55s.
